2008 National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month Press Conference and Kick-Off - SAMHSA-Sponsored
Description
The Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will unveil the results of the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health at a press conference on Thursday, September 4. The annual survey, formerly called the Household Survey is the largest of its kind, and is the governments primary vehicle for determining how many persons are abusing illegal drugs, pharmaceuticals, alcohol and tobacco.

The release of the 2007 survey results is the keynote of the annual National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month press conference marking a month long observance of the gains made by those in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse, as well as treatment providers.

Title
STARR Program display of "Join the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery" collage posters
Description
The Substance Treatment And Recidivism Reduction (STARR) program is an intensive four week in-jail chemical dependency treatment program. STARR is administered by Criminal Justice Resource Center in conjunction with the Durham County Office of the Sheriff. STARR provides chemical dependency treatment services to the criminal offender in the Durham County Detention Facility.

The program accepts volunteer and court-mandated men and women inmates into treatment for four weeks (STARR). Upon completion of STARR, an additional four-week program (STARR GRAD) is available. STARR also provides referral and case management services.

Treatment consists of addiction education, group therapy, and community resources education. Participants also attend daily 12-step H&I recovery meetings.

The Substance Treatment And Recidivism Reduction (STARR) program's contribution to National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month involves an art therapy project conducted with the July and August STARR and STARR GRAD classes. The men and women of STARR make "Celebrate Recovery" collage posters that are displayed in the lobby of the Durham County Detention Facility through September. The themes for the poster collages this year are "Celebrate Recovery" and "Join the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery".

Dr. Pam Silberman will deliver a presentation of the NC Institute of Medicine's report on Substance Abuse Recommendations that will be delivered to the NC General Assembly in January 2009. A few minutes will be given to legislators in attendance to respond to Dr. Silberman's presentation. The Coastal Coalition for Substance Abuse Prevention (CCSAP) will provide an update on coastal initiatives regarding substance abuse prevention in eastern North Carolina and how we are collaborating with other coalitions throughout the state. The Eastern Carolina Council for Substance Abuse (ECCSA) will recognize an outstanding community volunteer who has made a positive impact on recovery. Addiction nurses are integral to the process. Addiction nurses know firsthand the affects of addiction from treatment to counseling to education and from working with patients, families and communities. NOW addiction nurses can celebrate their experience along with their colleagues in the field of substance use disorders.
