About Volunteers for Peace, Inc.

Volunteers for Peace (VFP) is a Vermont non-profit membership organization promoting over 3000 International Voluntary Service programs in more than ninety five countries. Workcamps are an affordable short-term way to travel, live and work abroad.

Volunteers for Peace has opportunities throughout Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Africa, Asia, Australia and Latin America. US $250 per workcamp includes meals and accommodation. Russian, African and Latin American programs may cost $350-$600. All transportation is arranged and paid for by the volunteer. Anyone age 18 and up may participate in most programs. Although workcampers average ages are 21-25, we welcome volunteers of all ages 14-80.

Types of work include construction and restoration of low income housing or community buildings; environmental projects such as trail building, park maintenance, organic farming; social services working with children, the elderly, physically or mentally handicapped, refugees, minority groups, drug and alcohol recovery, AIDS education and arts projects; historic preservation and archaeology. Work projects can be of any type because they arise from the needs of the host community. This is a very grassroots program. Workcamps vary greatly in living conditions. Generally, 10-20 people from four or more countries arrive on a given day in a host community. You may be housed in a school, church, private home or community center. Living arrangements are generally cooperative, like a family, with volunteers coordinating and sharing the day-to-day activities such as food preparation, work projects and recreation. 80% of workcamps occur June through September. Duration is 2-3 weeks per! workcamp. Multiple placements are common. We also offer about 200 longer term programs. No foreign language proficiency required in most areas.

International Voluntary Service Activities

VFP does between 700-800 placements in any given year. The number of available vacancies within our network for Americans is roughly 4000 annually. Most placements are for a term of service between 2-3 weeks. Half of our volunteers now serve in the developing world.
