Pipelines and Informed Planning Alliance (PIPA)

PHMSA is partnering with local government planners, home builders, property developers, transmission pipeline operators and Local, State, and Federal officials to further enhance pipeline safety in communities throughout our Nation.

In January, 2008, PHMSA hosted the inaugural meeting of the Pipelines and Informed Planning Alliance (PIPA) to develop more detailed guidance for property development in the vicinity of transmission pipelines. A PIPA Plenary Session was followed by working meetings of three separate Task TeamsPresentations given at the Plenary Session and Task Team meetings, as well as several informative reference documents are available.

We are still in need of representatives from several stakeholder organizations to participate in the important work of these task teams. If you are interested in participating, please contact us.

Pipeline MarkerOur Nation’s economy is driven by abundant energy for industrial processes, electricity generation, transportation, and residential use. Natural gas and liquid transmission pipelines play a crucial role by safely delivering these energy products from sources of supply to markets.

While the risk of being injured by a transmission pipeline incident is low, as population centers grow and development occurs in proximity to pipelines, the likelihood of pipeline damage and serious incidents involving potential injuries and fatalities increases.

Through PIPA, PHMSA is engaging property developers, home builders, pipeline operators, Local, State and Federal government agencies to develop best practices for property development adjacent to transmission pipelines.
