Profile America — Sunday, November 30th. The state of the country’s economy is being closely watched, and as National American Indian Heritage month draws to a close, the role this population group plays in business is drawing attention. Businesses owned by American Indians and Alaska Natives grew in a recent five-year period and number more than 200,000, generating nearly $27 billion in business annually. The largest number of firms owned by this group is in California, with more than 38,000, while the top cities are New York, Los Angeles, and Gallup, New Mexico. Nearly a third of these businesses are involved in construction, personal services, repair and maintenance. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at <www.census.gov>.
