OSHA Signs Partnership with Residential Construction Employers Council To Promote Safe And Healthful Workplaces

AURORA, Ill. -- A partnership to reduce injuries, illnesses and deaths in the hazardous residential construction industry was signed today by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program of Illinois (DCCA), the Residential Construction Employers Council (RCEC) and the Northeast Illinois District Council of Carpenters Apprenticeship and Training Program.

"Cooperation among labor, management, federal and state agencies is vital to ensure the safety and health of workers at hazardous construction sites," said Michael G. Connors, OSHA regional administrator in Chicago.

The partnership will provide members with information and guidance that will help enhance employee safety programs, including ways to minimize hazards from falls. Members will work together to develop training on safety and health issues specifically aimed at residential construction. Members of the RCEC will be encouraged to participate in programs such as Consultation's Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) and the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).

The Residential Construction Employers Council, located in Oakbrook, represents more than 200 contractors involved in home building within Cook, Lake, DuPage, Will, Kendall, Kane and McHenry Counties. The council also provides information and training on safety hazards to members.

The Northeast Illinois District Council of Carpenters Apprenticeship and Training Program operates a state-of-the-art training facility in Elk Grove Village. The district council provides comprehensive education to union apprentices and training to journeymen.

A team of representatives from the agencies will meet regularly to set goals and objectives and track their progress. The partnership will remain in effect for three years. Members may renew the partnership annually.
