U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA renews partnership with V & R Drywall of El Paso to promote safety and health

EL PASO, Texas -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today renewed its partnership with V & R Drywall Inc. in El Paso to promote workplace safety and health in the El Paso-Lubbock area.

"V & R Drywall has been successful in keeping their injury and illness rate to at least 10 percent less than the national rate for their industry," noted Frank Strasheim, OSHA's regional administrator in Dallas. "We are pleased to renew our relationship with V & R for another three years."

El Paso-based V & R Drywall, a predominantly Hispanic construction company with nearly 150 employees, provides drywall, plaster work and building insulation. Under its partnership with OSHA, the company has hired personnel to administer safety and health programs and trained employees to recognize hazardous conditions and ensure they are promptly corrected. In addition, new employees receive a safety and health orientation, and the company has established a substance abuse program.

Employers and employees with questions about this or other OSHA partnerships may call the Lubbock area office at (806) 472-7681 or OSHA's El Paso district office at (915) 534-6251.

OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than one-million employees and more than 33,000 employers across the United States have participated with OSHA in more than 440 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
