OSHA, Alabama Safe State Consultation Services to Hold Safety Fair For Hispanic Workers and Families, Aug. 13, in Birmingham Area

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Hispanic workers and their families are invited to the Hispanic Family Safety and Health Fair, la Feria Familiar Hispana de Seguridad y Salud, Saturday, Aug. 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Pelham Civic Complex in Pelham, Ala.

The fair will focus on working safely in the construction and landscaping industries, with classes taught in Spanish by safety professionals. Topics will include: scaffolding, trenching, excavation and electrical safety; personal protective equipment; respiratory protection; health hazards in construction and landscaping; roofing, masonry, ladder safety; traffic control, and the safe use of construction tools and equipment.

The U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the University of Alabama's Safe State Consultation Services program organized the fair to promote safety and health for Hispanic workers and their families.

Employers and labor contractors are encouraged to attend and to send their Spanish-speaking workers to the fair.

"Thanks to the generosity of sponsors and volunteers, all classes will be presented free of charge," said Roberto Sanchez, director of OSHA's Birmingham area office.

Family members can receive free health screenings and instructions for a healthy lifestyle. Special activities are planned for children, including face painting.
