OSHA and Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Office Form Safety and Health Alliance With Engineers and Land Surveyors

SAN JUAN, P.R.
-- Improving workplace safety and health for workers in Puerto Rico is the goal of a new alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Professional College of Engineers and Land Surveyors of PR (CIAPR) and the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Office (OSHO).

OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships.

The purpose of the alliance is to provide members of the CIAPR and others with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to hazards in the construction industry.

"This alliance is an example of Secretary Chao's commitment to find cooperative ways to improve the health and safety for all workers," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's Regional Administrator for Region 2, which includes Puerto Rico. "We want to help educate employers and their workers to recognize and avoid hazards on the job."

The CIAPR is a not-for-profit quasi-public corporation constituted in 1938. Its mission is to defend and promote the development of the engineering and land surveying professions for the well being of Puerto Rico and the international community, by promoting the excellence and ethics of their members, as well as the development of the infrastructure for the best quality of life. The CIAPR holds an annual one-week convention and offer seminars, training and round-tables throughout the year.

Alliance signatories for OSHA were Regional Administrator Clark and Jose A. Carpena, OSHA area director for Puerto Rico. Signing for the Puerto Occupational Safety and Health Office was Assistant Secretary Jose Israel Droz Alvarado. CIAPR signatories included President Roberto Rexach Cintron, Executive Director Rodolfo Mangual and Magal Gonzalez Figueroa, director of the organization's Department of Professional Education.

Since 2001, the Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 160 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
