Goal Is To Reduce Fatalities, Injuries and Illnesses OMAHA, Neb. -- Ensuring safety and health for employees in the telecommunications tower industry is the goal of a new partnership between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and industry representatives within Nebraska. A signing ceremony will be held this morning at 10:00 a.m. in Omaha. OSHA Strategic Partnerships for Worker Safety and Health are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative relationships with groups including trade associations, labor organizations, and employers. Charles E. Adkins, CIH, OSHA regional administrator in Kansas City, said the partnership is the first with telecommunications tower owners within the Midwest region. It also represents only the third locally produced partnership with this industry nationwide. "With approximately 2,775 telecommunication towers located in Nebraska, this partnership is an important training vehicle for those involved in the erection, upgrade and maintenance of communications towers within the state," said Adkins. Participants will gain information, guidance and access to training resources to protect employees' health and safety in the telecommunications tower industry. The partnership also provides parties an opportunity to participate in a voluntary cooperative relationship with OSHA for purposes such as training and education, outreach and communication, and promoting a national dialogue on workplace safety and health. Participants in the partnership are Telecommunications Tower Owners and Subcontractors, USDOL-OSHA, and the Nebraska Department of Labor - Workforce Development OSHA Consultation. Since its Strategic Partnership Program began in 1998, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has formed more than 300 partnerships, impacting over 13,000 employers and 573,000 employees across the United States.
