Exposing Workers to Safety Hazards Proposed Penalties Total More Than $45,000 MOBILE, Ala. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited PSI Sales Inc. for exposing workers to safety hazards at its Theodore, Ala., plant. OSHA is proposing penalties totaling $45,125 following an inspection conducted under the agency's site specific targeting program. "Site specific targeting identifies industries with high injury and illness rates," said Ken Atha, area director for OSHA's Mobile office. "From that listing, establishments are randomly selected for inspection. The goal of the program is to identify and correct hazards that contribute to worker injuries, illnesses and deaths." OSHA issued one willful citation against PSI Sales, with a proposed penalty of $44,000, for exposing workers to amputation injuries from unguarded metal lathes. The agency issued a willful citation because the company has been cited previously for a similar safety hazard and that citation was upheld by the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. The company also received one serious citation, with a proposed penalty of $1,125, for exposing workers to electrical hazards from inadequate electrical receptacles in an area where rain water accumulated. The company has 15 working days to contest the OSHA citations and proposed penalties before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. The investigation was conducted by inspectors from OSHA's Mobile area office, 1141 Montlimar Drive; phone: (251) 441-6131.
