Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) are bringing Ready America closer to home with Ready Georgia, a statewide campaign designed to educate the residents of Georgia to "think, prepare and act" in advance of natural and man-made disasters. The Ready Georgia campaign aims to prepare citizens for maintaining self-sufficiency for at least 72 hours following an emergency.

During the Ready Georgia launch ceremony, held at the state capitol on January 28, Governor Perdue proclaimed February 3-9, 2008 "Severe Weather Awareness Week" supported by GEMA, the National Weather Service and Georgia's 161 local emergency management agencies. Each day of Severe Weather Awareness Week focused on a different topic:

  • Thunderstorms
  • Statewide Tornado Drill
  • Lightning
  • Floods and Flash Floods
  • SKYWARN™

"Preparation for a large-scale disaster can protect Georgians from undue harm and even save lives," said Governor Perdue."Individuals and families need to be the first line of defense and that means taking steps now to prepare. Ready Georgia is a valuable tool for all of our citizens."

To help Georgians prepare, The Home Depot, the premier campaign sponsor, will launch a charitable program later in 2008 to help low-income residents afford Ready kit items. The company has also created seasonal in-store Ready kit displays and is distributing Ready checklists at all Georgia locations throughout the year. Additionally, The Home Depot plans to have emergency preparedness information available on its Web site and to sponsor several other Ready events including a scavenger hunt focused on educating families about how to prepare for disasters.
