NEW: Poison Safety Education Added to Home Safety Literacy Project

With support from a generous Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant, HSC has developed leader’s guidance to support inclusion of poison safety education in local Home Safety Literacy Project outreach and a comprehensive package of poison prevention education materials on CD and DVD. While supplies last, this valuable new package is available to members of the Expert Network for just the cost of shipping and handling.

Most of the materials are also available as free downloads on HSC’s Expert Network.

Home Safety Literacy Project Implemented in Three High-Risk States

With support from a 2006 Fire Prevention and Safety grant, HSC developed training tools for in-state educational workshops to expand implementation of the Home Safety Literacy Project. The Facilitator’s Training Manual and Video Guide was pilot tested in three states that have exceptionally high fire-death rates: Arkansas, South Carolina and Tennessee.

What is the Home Safety Literacy Project?

The Home Safety Literacy Project provides an effective, low-cost, highly illustrated alternative to text-heavy public safety handouts.

Easy-to-read home safety education materials are needed in every community. More than 93 million adults in the U.S. have low reading ability, a serious barrier to learning necessary home fire safety skills and to understanding and applying key fire protection and disaster preparedness measures in the home.
