PEMBROKE MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO UTTERING, COUNTERFEITING CHARGES
Acting United States Attorney Julia C. Dudley announced today that Jonathan Neal Williams, age 23, of Pembroke, Virginia, pled guilty in United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke to charges related to the counterfeiting of United States obligations.
“The United States Attorney’s Office is committed to maintaining the integrity of our monetary system,” Acting United States Attorney Julia C. Dudley said today. “Investigations like this one are paramount in ensuring that the public does not lose faith in the authenticity of government obligations.”
Williams was charged on February 7, 2008 in a five count indictment with four counts of uttering counterfeit obligations and one count of counterfeiting obligations. He pled guilty today to one count each of uttering counterfeit obligations and counterfeiting obligations. These charges arose out of an investigation begun by the United States Secret Service.
A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for August 6, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. The maximum penalty faced by the defendant is 40 years of imprisonment.
The investigation of the case was conducted by the United States Secret Service for the Western District of Virginia. Assistant United States Attorney Charlene Day is prosecuting the case.
