U.S. ATLANTIC COAST
|
- U.S. Atlantic East Coast
- This interactive mapping site includes an index to 21
GLORIA sidescan sonar mosaics collected and
processed by the USGS in 1987. Additional
data layers contain coastal vulnerability index to future sea-level rise, bottom
photographs, surficial samples and sedimentary environment for the entire east coast.

GULF OF MAINE |
- Regional Overview - The USGS Gulf of Maine Internet Map Server (IMS) provides an overview of USGS research activities and GIS data compiled from various sources for the Gulf of Maine. Data layers include surficial samples and bathymetry contours.

- Cape Cod and Massachusetts Bay - This mapping site combines data from a number of individual publications that include high-resolution mapping of the seafloor off of Massachusetts, coastal vulnerability of National Seashore Park, and bedrock cores acquired from recent drilling in western Cape Cod. The mapserver highlights include wellsite information that provides links to the bedrock photograph locations and attribute of cores collected from recent drilling in western Cape Cod, Massachusetts and location and links to seafloor bottom photographs acquired from various field activities surrounding the area. Additional data layers include a geologic interpretation of Cape Cod and the Islands, Town boundaries, village names and roads.

MID-ATLANTIC |
- New York Bight Inner-Continental Shelf - The USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers (USACOE) undertook reconnaissance mapping of the continental shelf seaward of the New York -
New Jersey Metropolitan Area that includes the New York Bight and southern Long Island Coast.
The goal of the reconnaissance mapping was to provide a regional synthesis of the sea-floor
geology in the New York Bight area, including: (a) a description of sea-floor morphology; (b) a map of
sea-floor sedimentary lithotypes; (c) the geometry and structure of the Cretaceous strata and
Quaternary deposits; and (d) the geologic history of the region. This map site includes data compiled
from USGS Open-File Report 02-152. Data includes
surficial samples, sidescan sonar mosaic of the NY Bight area, geologic and seismic interpretations,
and ship navigation with links to browse versions of
the seismic records.

- Long Island Sound Estuary - This Internet Map Server site includes data compiled from various digital USGS GIS data publications. Data includes high-resolution
sidescan sonar mosaics, multibeam bathymetric data, derived bathymetry contours, core information, links to seismic data profiles and
various interpretive GIS data layers.

SOUTH ATLANTIC |
-
Long Bay, South Carolina - This Internet Map Server site contains data acquired by the
USGS, in partnership with the
South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium
(SCSGC), along the northern coastal area of South Carolina in Long Bay from Little River
Inlet to Winyah Bay. The objectives of the USGS/SCSGC cooperative program were: 1) to provide a
regional synthesis of the shallow geologic framework underlying the shoreface and inner
continental shelf, and to define its role in coastal evolution and modern beach behavior;
2) to identify and model the physical processes affecting coastal ocean circulation and
sediment transport, and to define their role in shaping the modern shoreline; and 3) to
identify sediment sources and transport pathways in order to develop a regional sediment budget.
The data presented here were acquired by the USGS
during field surveys from 1999-2003 and include side-scan sonar, multibeam bathymetry and grab
samples. Interpretive data layers, such as modern sediment thickness, seafloor environments
and geology and grain size distribution, that were created in support of the research
objectives are also included. The geospatial data presented here accompany
USGS Open-File Reports
OFR 2004-1013
and OFR 2005-1345,
describing the stratigraphic framework and modern sediment distribution within Long Bay.
