Time-Critical Removal, Granite Street Lead Site, Annapolis, Iron County, Missouri

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will conduct a Time-Critical Removal during the week of August 13, 2007 to address lead contamination at one residence.  During EPA’s first Time-Critical Removal at the Annapolis Lead Mine Site, several residential yards were screened for lead contamination after hearing reports of material being transported from the lead mine site by private citizens.

The investigation determined that the driveway of one residence in Annapolis, was contaminated with lead at a concentration of 1180 parts per million (ppm).  This concentration is above the site-specific residential lead action level.  Based on this information, EPA determined that a hazardous substance was present at the residence at levels that posed actual exposures to human health which determined the need for an emergency removal action.

TIME-CRITICAL REMOVAL

The Time-Critical Removal will begin August 13, 2007, and is expected to end around August 22, 2007.  The actions to
be taken during the removal process is digging out of lead contaminated material, treatment if necessary, and off site disposal and restoration.
