Americorps VISTA
Mid-Atlantic Environmental Health Corps
The Mid-Atlantic Environmental Health Corps mission is to promote sustainable environmental awareness and public health outreach programs which educate and mobilize underserved communities. AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is part of AmeriCorps, designed to help residents in disadvantaged communities create programs and structure them to be more self-sufficient.
Since 1964, Americorps*VISTA members have been working in underserved communities throughout the United States. By creating programs that will continue on after they complete their service, VISTA members encourage self-sustainability among the people they serve. Each VISTA strives to educate and empower the community with the resources it needs to become self-sufficient.
In order to develop these programs, VISTA members provide both indirect and direct service. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, grant writing, research, program coordination, and fund raising activities. Implementation of such ventures requires both patience and perseverance.
Working with the National Nursing Centers Consortium (NNCC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region III, allows VISTA members to perform outreach activities unique to this region. Because of the diversity of each program within the NNCC and the EPA, these VISTA members unite as the Mid-Atlantic Environmental Health Corps to work together in order to maintain environmentally healthy communities.
In addition to trainings and educational opportunities, VISTA members participate in a service project each month. Service projects allow the VISTA members to join together in direct community service, often times unrelated to their usual work activities. In the past, these projects have included visits to senior centers, community clean-up efforts, and assistance at homeless shelters and soup kitchens. Outreach endeavors are publicized in The Giving Tree, a newsletter produced by the NNCC, EPA, and VISTA.
