EPA Interns

EPA Student Programs/Internships

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is one of the youngest and most exciting federal agencies. Frequently in the headlines, the Agency works every day on cutting edge, controversial issues such as air pollution, hazardous waste, and water quality.

EPA Region III offers a variety of paid and unpaid internship opportunities for students in high school, undergraduate, graduate and beyond. Student employment can provide valuable work experience and exposure to a wide range of careers. Some schools even give students credit for working at EPA. Internship programs are available in the following programs:

I. Student Volunteer Program

This program allows you to explore career options as well as develop your personal and professional skills. Although you will not be paid under this program, you will be exposed to valuable work experiences that may enhance your ability to obtain paying jobs in the future.

Who is Eligible? You are eligible for this program if you are enrolled at least half-time in an academic, vocational or technical school.

II. Student Temporary Employment Program

This program allows you to develop your skills through on-the-job work experience at EPA. This temporary employment will enable you to earn a salary while continuing your studies. In addition, you may also be entitled to benefits such as holiday pay and vacation/sick time.

Who is Eligible? You are eligible if you are taking at least a half-time academic, vocational or technical course load and are a U.S. citizen.

III. Student Career Experience Program

This is a career-related employment program designed to enrich your academic experience while you gain valuable work experience in your career field. You will also receive benefits such as holiday pay and vacation/sick time. In addition, you may be noncompetitively converted to a permanent position at the completion of your program.

Who is Eligible? You are eligible for this program if you are enrolled in a qualifying academic, vocational or technical institution, pursuing a degree (or high school diploma), and taking a half-time course load. You must also be a U.S. citizen.

Most students work during the summer months. However, you can begin or continue to work at any time during the year, depending upon the availability of positions.
