Houston County, Alabama - Unknown Chemical Release

In August 2006, Houston County, Alabama applied for $19,259 in reimbursement for costs incurred in responding to an unknown chemical release on public property. Upon receiving reports of the chemical spill, the Houston County Commission notified their local emergency management agencies of the incident who then led the cleanup effort. Once the fire department, sheriff’s department, and other responding agencies had conducted the proper notifications and evacuations of local residents, a cleanup company was tasked to start the cleanup and removal of the hazard. Unable to locate the responsible individual for the incident, Houston County applied to EPA’s Local Government Reimbursement program which was able to assist the county in reimbursement of funds for this incident. Dodge County, Wisconsin - Chemical Fire

In December 2006, Dodge County, Wisconsin applied for reimbursement for a large chemical fire incident at the Watertown Tire and Recycling facility. The incident involved over 130 responding agencies and cost over $1,000,000 in total expenses. Because the facility’s insurance would not cover all of the response expenses such as overtime charges and materials used during the response, EPA’s Local Government Reimbursement program was able to provide a full award to Dodge County for $25,000 to assist in the reimbursement of costs associated with this tire fire. King George County, Virginia - Mercury Spill

King George County, Virginia applied for reimbursement in July 2006 for costs associated with a mercury spill in a school as a result of an accident in a materials storage room. Upon proper notification to emergency management authorities, a clean up contractor was called in for decontamination of the area and removal of the chemical hazard. The school’s insurance policy would not cover this type of incident, however, the Local Government Reimbursement program was able to provide a full award to assist in the reimbursement of contractor costs associated with this incident. Helper City, Utah - Hazardous Materials Response

Helper City, Utah contacted the U.S. EPA for reimbursement of costs incurred while responding to a clandestine methamphetamine lab in May 2006. Due to the hazardous nature of clandestine methamphetamine labs, the appropriate hazardous materials response team had to be called in for chemical removal and decontamination of law enforcement personnel. Since the responsible person for this incident was incarcerated, the Local Government Reimbursement program was able to assist the local community by awarding $25,000 for contractor and overtime costs incurred by the city.
