Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks participates in the national avian influenza surveillance effort. The goal of the program is to detect the Asian Bird Flu early if the virus finds its way into the Americas. The chances of encountering the virus in wild birds in the U.S. is extremely low at this time. Kansas hunters and birdwatchers are invited to play an important role in this national program. Hunters should expect biologists from KDWP and Wildlife Services (USDA-APHIS) to ask permission to collect a sample swab from their bagged birds. This quick and simple procedure does not affect the edibility or meat quality of the game.
