Sustainability
Highlights
The term sustainable development has been widely used in scientific, business, and public institutions since it was first defined in the Bruntland Commission's "Our Common Future" in1987. Sustainable development in that context refers to "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of further generations to meet their own needs." With all the publicity surrounding sustainable development, few people fully understand what is meant by the term or how to apply it to environmental work and everyday life.

Sustainable Development
Sustainable development is less of a program and more of a new multifaceted approach to managing our environmental, economic, and social resources for the long term. In its simplest terms, it means adding some new considerations or dimensions to our everyday decisions as a society. These considerations include:
- What are the long-term impacts of a decision?
- Is the decision sustainable on a local level?
- Have the economic, social, and environmental impacts been incorporated into the decision?
Federal, state, tribal, and local governments working together to achieve environmental protection goals will set the standard for cooperation between communities, businesses, and governments. This new collaborative decision making process will ensure better decisions, create more rapid change, and promote more sensible use of human, natural, and financial resources. Creating a widely held ethic of stewardship will encourage individuals, institutions, and corporations to take responsibility for the economic, environmental, and social consequences of their actions.

-Agricultural Funding ResourcesSustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SARE)
SARE works to increase knowledge about -- and help farmers and ranchers adopt -- practices that are economically viable, environmentally sound, and socially responsible. To advance such knowledge nationwide, SARE administers a competitive grants program first funded by Congress in 1988.Sustainable Development Program
The guiding principals of USDA's sustainable development initiatives related to Sustainable Forestry, Sustainable Agriculture, and Sustainable Rural Community Development are: (1) Sustainable Agriculture -- USDA supports the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of diverse food, fiber, agriculture, forest, and range systems; (2) Sustainable Forestry -- USDA balances the goals of improved production and profitability, stewardship of natural resources and ecological systems, and enhancement of the vitality of rural communities; and (3) Sustainable Rural Community Development -- USDA integrates these goals into its policies and programs, particularly through interagency collaboration, partnerships, and outreach.USDA CSREES Small Farms
USDA's Small Farm Program is committed to meeting the needs of the small farm community. The goal of the Small Farm Program is to improve the income levels and the economic viability of the small farm enterprises through partnerships with the Land Grant System and the public and private sectors by encouraging research, extension, and education programs to meet the specific needs of small farmers.- Community Supported Agriculture Program
Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a new idea in farming, one that has been gaining momentum since its introduction to the United States from Europe in the mid-1980s. In basic terms, CSA consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community's farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production.
