Region 8 Legacy Report

Welcome to the Legacy Report, a summary of EPA's achievements in the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains region from 2001-2008.

EPA's Rocky Mountains and Great Plains region -- what we refer to as Region 8 -- encompasses some of the nation's most vibrant landscapes and communities. Over the past eight years, EPA staff in our Denver office and our Helena, Montana field office have sought to protect the integrity of those landscapes and communities by taking actions that protect human health and the environment.

We have done so in many ways -- some dramatic and well-publicized, some smaller, but no less meaningful. We have finished cleaning up some of the most contaminated waste sites in the nation and sent them towards productive reuse. We have leveraged enforcement agreements with companies that reduce pollution and provide a necessary deterrent against future violations of environmental laws. We have helped clean up harmful emissions from school buses and have taken steps to remove dangerous chemicals from schools. We have helped provide safe drinking water to migrant farm worker camps and reduced exposure to toxics in environmental justice communities. These are examples of just some of the successes outlined in the report.

We hope you will find this document a record of your success as well. Environmental progress depends on the commitment of all the citizens, business owners, and partners in other agencies and non-profit organizations that live and work in our six states and 27 Tribal nations.

After all, environmental responsibility is everyone's responsibility. If you recycle, you are helping. If you are buying Energy Star appliances and light-bulbs and heating and cooling your home more wisely, you are helping. If you are buying WaterSense toilets and sinks and landscaping your yard to reduce your water consumption, you are helping. If you drive a fuel-efficient vehicle, you are helping.

And there is more you can do. Just visit our "what you can do" page to find out how you can help us continue to improve the quality of our air, land, and water resources.
