Griggs County, ND 319 Water Quality Project

(PESP Partner since September 1997

The Griggs County, North Dakota, project has received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency through the provisions of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (Clean Water Act) section 319. This statute is designed to aid states by funding a major share (usually 60%) of the cost of any of a set of management programs proposed by the state and approved by the Agency for the purpose of controlling pollution added from nonpoint sources to the navigable waters within the State and of improving the quality of these waters. The Griggs County Project is administered by the Water Quality Division of the Health Department of the State of North Dakota.

The Project participates with farmers and ranchers within the Sheyenne River and Bald Hill Creek watersheds in Griggs County in the cost of approved management programs. These programs include a successful Integrated Crop Management (ICM) program which provides for such help as the advice of a certified crop consultant, soil testing, and advice on nutrient (fertilizer) and pesticide management which may have a beneficial effect on water quality. There are at present five sites in each of the Sheyenne River and the Bald Hill Creek watersheds from which twenty water samples are drawn each year. At present these samples are tested for fertilizer residues, total suspended solids and coliform bacteria. The data derived provide a basis for assessment of the success of the programs in achieving their stated objectives.
