Almond Board of California

(PESP Partner since July 1997)

Did you know that all of the almonds grown commercially in the United States are grown in California? These delicious nuts, used in so many desserts, main dishes, and as snacks, are grown on about 400,000 acres in the Central Valley of California. Almonds are not only enjoyed by the U.S., they are extremely popular in the cuisines of Japan, Spain, Germany, and France. The Almond Board of California was established by a Federal Marketing Order in 1950. The Board is made up of growers and processors. Its mission is to expand markets, promote quality products, and to increase production of almonds. It sponsors research on almond varieties, crop management practices, and pest management. Some pesticide-related research projects include replacements for methyl bromide, use of leguminous cover crops for nitrogen fixing, IPM to control mite pests of pollinating bees, several pheromone projects, and ant and nematode control projects.
