ENERGY STAR Labeled Building Profile

640 VA Palo Alto Healthcare System - Palo Alto
3801 Miranda Avenue
Palo Alto, CA 94304

building

The VA Palo Alto Healthcare System pursues an aggressive energy management program.

The System that earned the ENERGY STAR comprises three main campuses with 81 buildings, representing 2.5 million square feet. Projects in the past year included (1) installing Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to reduce electrical usage by slowing down ventilation motors during low demand; (2) installing HVAC timers to shut down parts of the building when not in use; and (3) relamping three buildings with energy-efficient lighting.

As part of regular O&M, the supply air temperature was raised in several buildings to reduce electrical and steam load. Other energy saving initiatives included correcting power factors to reduce or eliminate power factor charges by the utility company, and carrying out a steam trap survey and making necessary corrections to reduce wasted steam.

These recent energy saving projects along with improvements made over the years resulted in Palo Alto being selected to fast track an ESPC Energy pilot for VA Network 21 (which includes VA facilities in San Francisco, Fresno, Northern California, Reno, and Hawaii), along with Networks 4 & 22. Once completed, the program will be exported to the other VA Networks across the nation.
