These are a listing of EPA documents that contain the methods and where you can obtain the hardcopy documents. This is a link to an alphabetic listing of EPA methods by type of test procedure or analyte on EPA's National Web Site. This provides a cross reference to the method/ analyte name, method number, and document number. To locate the document where the method is published - find the method and document number, then go to the Method Sources below to find the document title and where to order. The EPA Test Method Source Index lists the sources for the documents cited in the EPA Methods Index.
Source Specific Emission Monitoring Methods
EPA's Emission Measurment Center (EMC) houses the air methods 1 to 29, 101 to 115, 201 to 205, 301 to 321, Continuous Emission Monitoring methods, and proposed air methods which are referenced in 40 CFR Parts 60 and 61 (Available in WordPerfect and Adobe Acrobat PDF format).
Ambient Air Monitoring Methods
The Ambient Monitoring Technical Information Center (AMTIC) compendiums contain the methods for monitoring for NAAQS pollutants, inorganics (IO-1 to IO-5), toxic organic (T0-1 to TO-17), as well as open path monitoring.

Reference for many wastewater and drinking water methods of analyses. This is available from some scientific equipment vendors or directly from the American Public Health Association, 1015 15th Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20005.
- Methods for Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes, EPA-600/4-79-020, March 1979 and Revised March 1983
This document contains the 0 to 400 series of water analyses methods for conventional pollutants, such as BOD, COD, nitrogen species, phosphorus, pH, metals, etc. This document is available from ORD Publications, CERI, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Cincinnati, OH 45268.
- EPA Methods and Guidance for the Analysis of Water, EPA-821/C-97-001
This is a CD-ROM that includes all wastewater test methods approved at 40 CFR Part 136 and all drinking water test methods approved at 40 CFR Part 141, including the 500, 600, and 1600 series methods in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF). The CD includes a number of guidance documents related to EPA's wastewater and drinking water programs. The National Technical Information Service order number is PB97-501308LTL (1997 price is $60.00 plus shipping/handling), the NTIS phone number is (703) 487-4650.
This guidance document at this site was originally prepared under contract for U.S. EPA Region 10. Its purpose is to propose methods and/or guidance for performing analyses in marine water, sediments, or tissues. Chapters are available as PDF files.

- National Enviornmental Methods Index (NEMI)
NEMI is being developed under the direction of the Methods and Data Comparability Board, a partnership of water-quality experts from Federal agencies, States, Tribes, municipalities, industry, and private organizations. NEMI is an expanding and evolving database and is, therefore, not a complete source for all environmental methods. NEMI is designed to allow rapid comparison of the qualities, capabilities, and relative costs of various methods within the limitations of information provided by the method source. Method information is submitted by the public and private sources that publish them, and is reviewed prior to inclusion in the NEMI database. The Methods and Data Comparability Board does not develop methods, endorse methods, or provide technical support for the use of methods. Users should exercise caution when comparing performance data as these may have been generated under a variety of circumstances. Additional questions should be directed to the method source.
