Human Studies Division Navigation

Human Studies DivisionThe Human Studies Division conducts clinical and epidemiological research to improve the understanding of human health risks associated with environmental pollution. HSD is one of nine divisions within EPA's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory within the Office of Research and Development of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. HSD with four other divisions, are focused on addressing key questions affecting the assessment of human health effects from exposure to environmental pollutants. Within this context, HSD is responsible for providing new research results, advice, and leadership by advancing human-based, scientifically-sound research approaches for understanding the exposure, deposition, and biological impacts of pollutants in exposed people.

Through its mission, staff expertise, and unique physical infrastructure; and in partnerships with its sister divisions and other collaborators locally, nationally and internationally, HSD has the capability and a successful history of sustaining major efforts to address significant Agency problems. Further, HSD has the ability to address emerging issues and to incorporate new approaches to address existing and new research challenges. The division comprises approximately 55 federal employees and is located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Exit EPA Disclaimer. UNC's Center for Environmental Medicine and Lung Biology Exit EPA Disclaimer has a cooperative agreement with HSD and is co-located in the facility.
