Deputy Secretary Simon kicked off International Education Week 2007 by welcoming leaders from education, state and federal government, business, and non-governmental organizations to the Library of Congress for a panel discussion, "Global-Ready Students and Citizens: The Need and Future of International Education and Foreign Language Learning." The discussion was followed by events throughout the week, including a dance performance and art display by students from Arlington's Mongolian School; a video dialogue between U.S. and United Kingdom experts on teaching global citizenship and respect; a discussion of the state of U.S. math education with experts in China, Japan, and Korea; a presentation by Arlington Science Focus School 4th graders of lunar growth chambers; and a video discussion with Japanese and U.S. students on the importance of second language learning and cultural understanding.
