Research Project: DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF TECHNIQUES TO DETECT TOXOPLASMA GONDII IN WATER

Location: Animal Parasitic Diseases

Project Number: 1265-32000-076-15
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: May 01, 2005
End Date: Apr 30, 2009

Objective:
To develop test for the detection of Toxoplasma gondii in environmental water supplies.

Approach:
Toxoplasma gondii oocysts will be obtained from feces of experimentally infected cats, purified by sucrose-gradients. Oocysts will be sporulated in 2% sulfuric acid as preservative and then stored at 4 C until used. Known numbers of oocysts will be mixed with water samples and then sensitivity of various methods (bioassay, PCR, monoclonal antibodies) will be tested.
