Burleson Indpendent School District

Burleson, Texas
Top Performer (2008)

The mission of Burleson Independent School District, an innovative partnership with parents and community, is to prepare each student to be a responsible contributing citizen, able to achieve maximum personal potential and embrace change by addressing individual student differences through exemplary curriculum programs, and staff in a progressive and safe environment.  The City of Burleson is located approximately fifteen miles south of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and currently has a population of 31,000.  B.I.S.D. includes eleven campuses, representing 1,300,000 square feet of floorspace, and educates approximately 9,500 students.  At the present time, there are three new elementary schools under construction with plans to begin construction on a new "green" high school in the summer of 2008.  As our district continues to grow and energy costs continue to rise, it becomes even more important that we educate every student and employee about the benefits of being "energy savers."

In 1999, the B.I.S.D. School Board adopted an Energy Management Policy. Since that time, the district has steadily reduced its energy use while saving almost three million dollars.  Before the start of the 2005-2006 school year, an Automated Energy Management System was installed at our high school.  The success of the system at Burleson High School played a major role in the approval by our school board to implement the system district-wide.  The impact has been immediate and the results very encouraging.  By the end of 2007, Burleson Independent School District reduced its electrical usage by 850,000 kWh and saved over $85,000 compared to the same time period in 2006.  Our total energy reduction for that year resulted in a savings of over $210,000.  In addition, Burleson I.S.D. achieved an average ENERGY STAR rating of 92 for all eleven schools in the district.  Participation in ENERGY STAR has provided the district with many valuable resources and ideas that has helped us meet our energy goals and become good stewards of the environment and taxpayer monies.  As we look toward future growth, we will continue to be leaders in energy efficiency and examples for our community and others around us.
