With 29 separate sites serving more than 18,000 K-12 students in Due to rising energy costs, the district committed to an energy-reduction program with support from the central office, board of education, maintenance department, and school administrators. Since it began to implement the program, Nash-Rocky Mount reduced energy use by more than 18.8 million kWh and achieved cost avoidance savings of more than $3.1 million from September 2004 to August 2007. The district's partnerships with Educon Educational Consulting, Yamas Controls, Johnson Controls, and the State Energy Office helped it teach behavior change to faculty and students, change direct digital control systems to more energy-efficient controls, participate in State-sponsored tune-ups for district facilities, and increase preventive maintenance. Nash-Rocky Mount Schools joined ENERGY STAR in 2006.
