20% Improvement (2006)

Muskogee Public Schools (MPS) educate approximately 11,879 K-12 students across 14 school buildings. The school district has assessed the energy performance of all of its schools and undertaken improvements since partnering with ENERGY STAR in 2002, averaging nearly a 30 point improvement in energy efficiency. Building improvements included installation of high-efficiency lighting, temperature controls, and an energy management system. MPS saved 541,381 kilowatt hours in 2005 as a result of the upgrades - enough energy to power more than 50 homes per year. MPS financed the work from the energy savings generated by the improvements. Those savings - expected to be $196,000 per year over 10 years, or 20% of the school's former energy bill - are guaranteed by Honeywell Corporation International under a performance contract with the district. This ensures the upgrades will not impact education budgets or require additional taxpayer dollars.
