Fern Forest - Cypress Creek

(This photo, seen from the southwest seating area of Cypress Creek Trail, is a 360-degree IPIX interactive image, which allows you to navigate with your mouse: up, down, right and left, in order to see the entire surrounding landscape.)

In 1909, as part of the plans to drain the Everglades for farmland, plans to drain Cypress Creek were made. The Cypress Creek area was surveyed, the drainage was authorized and between 1912 and 1916, Canal C-14 was constructed. Today, bald cypress, red maple, and coastal plain willow communities grow in the former channels of Cypress Creek.

When the photo is first loaded you are looking from the Fern Forest wooden boardwalk, at a large tree trunk that has been enveloped by a strangler fig tree.

Navigating to the right, beyond the boardwalk seating area, a lush green forested area predominates. More seating area continues to the right, and more large tree trunks and strangler figs are present as well.

As you continue the 360-degree turn to the image’s starting point, more of Fern Forest’s boardwalk and the surrounding lush greenery of the forest is seen.

Navigating up with your mouse, you can see sunlight shining through the forest canopy. Navigating down, you see the South Florida Information Access (SOFIA) web site logo, which is linked to the SOFIA main page (http://sofia.usgs.gov).
