History Matters is a project of the Coalgate Public School District in partnership with the National Council for History Education, the Foxfire Fund, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, the Okalahoma Technical Assistance Center, the Choctaw Nation, the Coalgate Library, and the local Coal Miners Museum. The project targets more than 700 students in the economically depressed center of the Indian Nations Empowerment Zone of southeastern Oklahoma. The project aims to improve instruction and raise achievement among students of American history through a five- part professional development plan for the District's American history teachers. Professional development plan components include a system of summer colloquia, pre-service and in-service training for teachers, support for teachers as scholars, sustained on-going collaboration among partners, community and service partners, and mentorship with university faculty.
