Author Searching [AU]

PubMed recognizes the format last name plus initials as an author search. PubMed will automatically truncate the author's name to account for varying initials.

To search for articles authored by J. O'Brien, regardless of middle initials, type o'brien j[au] and click on Go to review the displayed citations. Notice the author values in the illustration include O'Brien, JJ, and O'Brien, JT. [Show Me]

To turn off automatic truncation of an author's name, surround the name with double quotes and use the [au] tag.

  • Example: "o'brien j"[au]

The citations returned will be restricted to O'Brien, J. [Show Me]

If you are searching a last name only (no initials), be sure to use the [au] tag.
