Working Group
on Occurrence & Contaminant Selection
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
National Drinking Water Advisory Council
Working Group on Occurrence & Contaminant Selection
Conference Call, June 23, 1997
Washington, D.C.
1. Attendance: absent - Mohamed Elnabarawy; alternates
(for Glenn Patterson) - John Zogorski & Bob Gilliam; all other working
group members in attendance.
2. Issues Discussed: The purpose of this call was to
review, analyze and discuss the progress toward the development of the
first Drinking Water Candidate List since the last meeting of the working
group on April 3-4, 1997.
3. Issues Resolved:
a. The input on microorganisms developed from the Microbiology and
Public Health Workshop, held May 20-21, 1997 were discussed. The working
group fundamentally agreed with the approach and suggestions presented
for the microoganisms, but will have an opportunity to comment until
July 7, 1997.
b. Sulfate, nickel, and aldicarbs will be included on the Candidate
List, but are not subject to the selection criteria. Sulfate, as required
by the 1996 SDWA Amendments, to be one of the 5 or more contaminants
for which a determination is made by 2001 and is therefore on the List
which is the source of other compounds to be selected for determination.
Nickel and aldicarbs were required to be regulated prior to 1996 Amendments,
and the requirements have not been fulfilled. In order that these compounds
not be overlooked, they will be included on the Candidate List as well.
c. Adjustments to the set of criteria, which was developed April 3-4,
was discussed. It was decided that a two-tiered approach would be more
appropriate to determine the importance of the occurrence of a contaminant.
Figure 1 is a representation of the changes made. The criteria are being
used to assess occurrence & health information to gauge risk.
4. Next Steps: The next meeting of the Working Group
will be via conference call July 17, 1997. At that time the results of
applying the criteria to the remainder of EPA's starting list, and recommendations
for the draft Candidate List will be discussed. The List will be provided
as a recommendation to the National Drinking Water Advisory Council the
following week.
