NDWAC Working Group on Occurrence & Contaminant Selection Conference Call
July 17, 1997

Executive Summary

Washington, D.C.

1. Attendance: absent - Gary Toranzos, Adi Pour; alternate (for Dave Paris) - Alan Roberson, all other Working Group Members in attendance.

2. Issues Discussed: The purpose of this call was to review and discuss the results of using the criteria developed for the generation of the draft Drinking Water Candidate List, and to develop recommendations for consideration by the National Drinking Water Advisory Council.

3. Issues Resolved:

a. The input on microorganisms developed from the Microbiology and Public Health Workshop has been accepted and it is recommended that the microorganisms identified be included on the draft Candidate List.

b. The chemical contaminants identified using the criteria have been accepted and it is recommended that they be included on the draft Candidate List with the following modifications:

Defer phosphorous. It's suspected that data is mis-labeled as "phosphorus" and is thought to be that of phosphate. Phosphorous is known to be insoluble.
Add a note to indicate that for sodium it's expected that guidance for sensitive sub-populations will be developed.
Add a note to cyanazine to indicate it be addressed as total triazines in combination with other currently regulated triazine pesticides.

Defer 31 pesticides (Table C) identified based solely on a calculated Risk value of 2.0 or greater developed by the EPA Office of Pesticides Programs. The risk value does not include a component which relates to concentrations of concern to human health. A more comprehensive body of work is underway and will provide a risk calculation which includes physical-chemical properties, pesticide use as well as a human health related component. This body of work will be available for future use.

Suspend the proposed tiering of the List. Present the List as a draft and specifically state information needs. The idea of dividing the List of contaminants into two groups based on information needs will be revisited before the List is published in its final form in February 1998.

4. Next Steps: The draft List will be provided with recommendations to the National Drinking Water Advisory Council at its meeting on May 21, 1997. The next meeting of the Working Group is tentatively planned for early November 1997. At that time a summary of the comments on the draft Candidate List and expected changes will be discussed. Other topics on the agenda will include the development of a process for future contaminant identification and selection, and the National Drinking Water Occurrence Contaminant Database.
