Area Map

The area mapping feature for NPL sites enhances the amount of information available to you through the Basic and Advanced Site Queries. Using this feature you are able to access an interactive map of NPL sites that are displayed on your results page. The area map allows you to zoom in, zoom out, and pan, and thereby find more NPL sites in the area. You are also able to find out information about the surroundings of a site such as how many schools are in the vicinity, or what rivers are nearby.

To make the best use of the Area Map feature follow these steps:

  1. On the Advanced Query Form, choose the criteria you wish to search including the Display option for the "Area Map" field. On the Basic Query Form, you do not need to make a selection; the Area Map option will always appear as part of the results page.
  2. A table will be returned displaying the results selected. The last column will be labeled "Area Map" and an entry will appear as a green check mark in this column if a map is available. This is a link to the Area Map for the specific site in that row of the results table.
  3. By clicking on the green check mark, a map will appear in a new browser window. This allows you to return to the query results page at any time by simply opening the previous window.
  4. At this point go ahead and explore the different capabilities of the interactive mapping tool.
  5. One capability to note is the Identify feature available in the Navigation Panel. By selecting this radio button and clicking on the NPL site, identified by a purple box or star on the map, a link will appear under the map with the site name followed by its CERCLIS ID. By clicking on this link, a page similar to the basic query results page will be returned. This page will only contain information related to the site identified in the map. A link at the bottom of this new results page will take you to the Advanced Query Form with the name of this site and its CERCLIS ID already filled in. You can then choose any other search criteria you are interested in to learn more about the site.
