Frequently Asked Questions

Who is covered under the Longshore Act?

With certain exceptions (most notably members of crews of vessels), the Longshore Act provides medical and wage benefits to all "maritime employees", a category that includes not only workers in longshore and marine-terminal operations and shipyard workers, but also marine-construction workers and all non crew-members who work aboard vessels. Coverage also depends on the location at which the injury occurs (or at least some of the exposure to the working conditions leading to an occupational disease took place); generally, it must be either aboard a vessel or within the nearby waterfront area.
