Will a bioeconomy that produces fuel and chemicals from biorenewable resources be sustainable? Robert Anex, an Iowa State University associate professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, is leading several studies looking for some answers. One study found that an integrated process for producing ethanol from plant fiber could recycle plant nutrients back to the soil.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that
