FHWA Briefing GSB-88: Spray Applied Polymer Emulsion Field Studies

Recent transportation legislation authorized two research studies on sealers/rejuvenators. Due to similarities in the two studies, they are being conducted as one study. The National Center for Asphalt Technologies (NCAT) in Auburn, Alabama is contracted to do one study focusing primarily on the Gilsonite product, GSB-88. The Foundation for Pavement Preservation is contracted by FHWA to conduct the other study titled "Evaluation of Emulsified Sealer/Binders for Extending the Life of Asphalt Pavements." The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of specific products on varying field test sections on extending the life of asphalt pavements when applied in several climatological zones. NCAT will be doing the laboratory testing on the capabilities of all tested sealer/rejuvenators extending the life of asphalt pavements. Guidelines for using sealer/binders along with tools and techniques for establishing how much and when to apply them will be developed from these studies.

To evaluate sealers/rejuvenators, one pilot project is being constructed in each AASHTO region. Each pilot project has five test sections: one control and four sealer/rejuvenator products. The projects in Arizona and California have been completed; those in Michigan, Minnesota and Alabama will be constructed the summer of 2002.

National and local workshops identifying the state-of-the-practice of sealers/rejuvenators will be conducted and, based on those proceedings, will guide the conduct of the research study to address the needs of the States. One local workshop was conducted in Flagstaff, Arizona in September 2001. The first National workshop was held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on March 1, 2002. Thirty-five State and industry representatives participated in that workshop.
