An Investigation of the Endurance Limit of Hot-Mix Asphalt Concrete Using a New Uniaxial Fatigue Test Protocol

General Interest: provides practical guidance to engineers responsible for the day-to-day design, construction, rehabilitation, maintenance, and management of pavements. Research/Reference: useful for researchers doing further work in the pavement area as well as those developing improved testing and design procedures. Includes documents of historical value.

Primary Topic: Pavement Testing

Description: This report describes the findings of a study to investigate the existence of an endurance limit for hot-mix asphalt concrete using a uniaxial fatigue testing protocol. The test results indicated that three of the four mixtures tested exhibit an endurance limit below which no fatigue damage is expected regardless of the number of cycles applied. The report describes other observations and research problems encountered along with recommendations for further studies.
