TechBrief: Roughness Trends of Flexible Pavements

Research/Reference: useful for researchers doing further work in the pavement area as well as those developing improved testing and design procedures. Includes documents of historical value.

Primary Topic: Surface and Other Considerations

Description: 4-page technical brief that discusses a study to investigate the changes in roughness of flexible pavements over time and their relationship to design factors, subgrade conditions and climatic conditions. Key findings were that most flexible sections showed little change in roughness over time, pavements over fine grained soils had a higher IRI, and pavements in areas with a high freezing index or a high number of freeze thaw cycles had higher IRI values.
