NCES 2004314 Violence in U.S. Public Schools: 2000 School Survey on Crime and Safety
This report presents the first analysis of the 2000 School Survey on Crime and Safety (SSOCS). SSOCS is a nationally representative sample of public elementary and secondary school principals. Principals were asked about the amount of crime and violence, disciplinary actions, prevention programs and policies, and other school characteristics. While the SSOCS collects a wide variety of information, this report focuses on the violence that occurred in American public schools during the 1999-2000 school year.

NCES 2002331 Are America's School Safe? Students Speak Out: 1999 School Crime Supplement
This report presents the most recent information from students regarding school crime and violence. The data presented in the report are from the 1999 School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey. Students between the ages of 12 and 18 are asked about experiencing criminal victimization, availability of drugs and alcohol, presence of street gangs, presence of weapons, experiencing hate-related words and graffiti, bullying, avoiding school, and fear of attending school.

This brochure is designed to describe the Safety in Numbers Handbook. The Handbook can be used by school, district, and state staff to improve the effectiveness of their efforts to collect and use disciplinary incident data. It provides recommendations on what types of data to collect, what it is critical to collect such data, and how the data can be used effectively to improve school safety and answer policy questions relating to school improvement and the safety of our students. NCES 2002025 The Condition of Education 2002
The Condition of Education summarizes important developments and trends in education using the latest available data. The report, which is required by law, is an indicator report intended for a general audience of readers who are interested in education. The indicators represent a consensus of professional judgment on the most significant national measures of the condition and progress of education for which accurate data are available. The 2002 print edition includes 44 indicators in six main areas: (1) enrollment trends and student characteristics at all levels of the education system from preprimary education to adult learning; (2) student achievement and the longer term, enduring effects of education; (3) student effort and rates of progress through the educational system among different population groups; (4) the quality of elementary and secondary education in terms of courses taken, teacher characteristics, and other factors; (5) the context of postsecondary education; (6) and societal support for learning, including parental and community support for learning, and public and private financial support of education at all levels. This edition also includes special analyses on the environment, climate, and student outcomes at private schools and on the enrollment and persistence of nontraditional undergraduates.

NCES 2001030 Monitoring School Quality: An Indicators Report
This report explores why some schools may be better than others at helping students learn. It reviews 13 characteristics of schools, classrooms, and teachers that are most likely related to school quality and student learning. For each indicator, the report identifies where national data are currently available and reliable. It assesses the current status of our schools by examining and critiquing these national indicator data. The report is designed for policymakers, researchers, and others interested in assessing the strength of our schools.

NCES 2000303 School-Level Correlates of Academic Achievement
This study linked three sources of data (1) 1993 Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS), (2) student achievement data from state assessements (3) 1994 State NAEP Reading and 1992, 1996 State NAEP Mathematics. A composite set of 18 variables including school size, class size, cohesion of faculty, teacher qualifications, and teacher perceptions of school climate. These school characteristics were linked to state assessment scores and various aggregate relationships were analyzed based upon different between-school within state structural equation models (SEM).

NCES 2000312 In the Middle: Characteristics of Public Schools With a Focus on Middle Schools
This report uses data from the Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS), conducted in 1987-88, 1990-91, and 1993-94, and the accompanying Teacher Followup Survey (TFS), conducted a year after each administration of SASS, to describe various aspects of middle schools, examine how they have changed over time, and compare middle schools with elementary and secondary schools. These data provide information on fundamental dimensions of school organization, programs and services, decision making and management, staffing matters, instructional practices, and school climate.

NCES 1999002 Indicator of the Month: Student Victimization at School
Violence in schools directly affects educators and students by reducing school effectiveness and inhibiting student learning. Additionally, unsafe school environments expose students who may already be at risk for school failure to physical and emotional harm. In recent years, educators and policymakers have voiced growing concern about possible increases in the incidence of school-related criminal behavior. Studying trends in victimization rates provides a picture of the safety of today’s schools.

NCES 97910 Teachers' Sense of Community: How Do Public and Private Schools Compare?
Do public and private school teachers differ in the sense of community they perceive at work? Is the sense of community experienced by teachers at work more pronounced in private school settings? Data from the Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS), conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), are used to explore these questions.
