Employment in 1996: jobs up, unemployment down

Overall job gains were moderated by losses in nondurable goods manufacturing and Federal employment; declining unemployment was tempered by persistent long-term joblessness. This article discusses some of the major changes in the labor market from 1995 to 1996 in terms of industries and individuals. Data are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ two monthly surveys of employment, the Current Employment Statistics survey and the Current Population Survey.
