The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is a continental-scale research platform for discovering and understanding the impacts of climate change, land-use change, and invasive species on biological systems. Using standardized protocols and an open data policy, NEON will gather long-term data on ecological responses of the biosphere to changes in land use and climate and on feedbacks from the geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. These data are essential for developing the scientific understanding and theory required to manage the Nation's ecological challenges. Many USGS and other Federal, university, and private-sector scientists and specialists are involved in NEON activities. This task supports a U.S. Geological Survey NEON Science Liaison from FORT who will (1) develop and test biodiversity sampling protocols for the network of sites; (2) design and integrate an analysis framework for NEON's ecological investigations related to invasive species; (3) continue to participate on the NEON Program Review Committee for the National Science Foundation; and (4) support USGS-NEON science communication and cooperation.
