EPA BROWNFIELDS PROGRAM
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA funds eligible applicants through assistance agreements to provide training, research, and technical assistance to facilitate brownfields revitalization.
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
The Sustainable Community Development Group, Inc., (SCDG) was established in 2004 to specialize in programs that address diverse populations, including people of color, low-income communities, the underserved, and those living in areas experiencing environmental, health, and economic under-investment. SCDG is partnering with the National Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM), a 34-year-old nonprofit organization of 641 mayors nationwide. NCBM's mission is to enhance the executive management capacity of its members for the purpose of governing viable municipalities through technical and management assistance.

Project Description:
SCDG and National Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM) are partnering to develop and implement the Greening of Brownfields Program, which will demonstrate how mayors can reuse idle properties in ways that address equity and community issues. This program will cover green design, buildings, and technologies; energy conservation; recycling; relevant certification programs; and employment options in green collar jobs. The project will educate nearly 700 African-American mayors from around the nation, inform their redevelopment decisions, and deliver tools that facilitate leadership in equitable development and sustainability. It will target NCBM mayors whose communities face impediments to redevelopment, including weak markets and barriers to information about the benefits of green redevelopment strategies. It also will enhance the capacity of local governments to address land use, the environment, and services designed to protect public health and welfare.
