EPA BROWNFIELDS PROGRAM
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA funds eligible applicants through assistance agreements to provide training, research, and technical assistance to facilitate brownfields revitalization.
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
The Delta Redevelopment Institute is a nonprofit environmental and economic organization that provides technical assistance to revitalize blighted communities. The Institute was formed in 1998 to work for a cleaner environment, healthier communities, and a greener economy in the Great Lakes Region. It provides expert services to business, government and community-based partners to create opportunities in blighted areas. The Institute redevelops brownfields, designs innovative development strategies, creates flexible financing, and advocates for policies that support a sustainable future.

Project Description:
The Delta Redevelopment Institute will examine new reuse opportunities for brownfield sites in weak market communities. These opportunities will be linked to new green policies, such as climate change action plans, green building activities, and waste recycling mandates. The project will advance existing research on greener cleanups, and produce educational material in user-friendly form for local stakeholders. Training tools and technical assistance will help to build capacity and vision for more sustainable redevelopment of brownfields in a variety of weak market communities.
