Data Projects

The Great Lakes National Program Office has undertaken several major data-intensive projects including the Green Bay Mass Balance and the Lake Michigan Mass Balance. Also, GLNPO is in the process of entering monitoring data into a multi-media relational database called the Great Lakes Environmental Database.

Green Bay Mass Balance
The Green Bay Mass Balance Study was conducted in 1989-90 to pilot the technique of mass balance analysis in understanding the sources and effects of toxic pollutants in the Great Lakes' food chain.

Lake Michigan Mass Balance
The Lake Michigan Mass Balance Study was conducted in 1994 and 1995, and measured PCBs, mercury, trans-nonachlor, and atrazine in rivers, the atmosphere, sediments, lake water, and the food chain.

Great Lakes Environmental Database
The Great Lakes Environmental Database (GLENDA) is being developed to provide long-term storage, access, and analysis capabilities for environmental data on the Great Lakes to meet the needs of scientists, policy makers, and other users.
