Objective/Intended Use

The National Center for Environmental Assessment - Cincinnati operates the Superfund Health Risk Technical Support Center (SFTSC) for the Office of Emergency and Remedial Response (OERR). The SFTSC was established to provide technical information, address scientific questions of concern or interest, and promote greater consistency on topics relevant to human health risk assessment for EPA's regional and Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response personnel. The center also serves to identify data gaps and long-term research needs in risk assessment.

Abstract

The SFTSC provides technical assistance to EPA's regions on site-specific health risk assessments, develops externally peer reviewed provisional toxicity values and updates these values on a three-year turn around cycle. The SFTSC, when requested, conducts on-site risk assessments/risk assessment reviews, and develops methods and guidelines on specific issues of concern to Superfund risk assessors.

Project Status

Responses to regional requests for chemical specific health-related information, surrogate toxicity values, and guidance concerning EPA's risk assessment methods are provided in a timely manner; rapid turn-around requests are communicated via e-mail. Newly developed or updated peer reviewed toxicity values are provided in 6-8 weeks to the requestors. An annual report describing major activities and emerging issues addressed will be submitted to OSWER in January 2004.
