H-E-B is one of the largest, independently owned food-retailing companies in the United States. Since 1905, H-E-B has grown to include more than 300 stores serving Texas and northern Mexico. With over 60,000 employees, called Partners, they are the largest private employer in the State of Texas with annual sales exceeding $10 billion. Part of their truck fleet runs on liquefied natural gas, and they incorporate other measures, such as limiting idling time to five minutes or less, to reduce harmful emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and lower their dependence on traditional fuels. They conserve resources through recycling programs, water and energy conservation and efficiency initiatives, and design their stores and facilities to have a minimal impact on the environment.
